Your “day one” primer — from attaching the propane cylinder to cleaning up.

propane grill tank Flagstaff, az Customers often come to us asking for suggestions about switching from charcoal grilling to a propane freestanding grill. While grilling with charcoal has its advantages (especially when you’re slow cooking or smoking), propane has been the country’s most popular barbecue fuel for some time. It’s clean-burning, with no chemical taste or overpowering smokiness. Propane grills heat up quickly and offer precise temperature control.

It all adds up to a convenient, clean and adaptable barbecue setup.

At Superior Propane, our propane appliance experts advise northern Arizona customers about which propane grilling products are best. We also help them secure the fuel they need to get started.

Here’s a breakdown of crucial steps to start using your new propane grill.

Attaching your propane cylinder.

Most freestanding grills have a storage space in a compartment underneath the cooking area where you place and connect to your propane cylinder. Here is the process:

  1. Slide the cylinder into the compartment in an upright position.
  2. Many grills have a restraining bolt that secures your cylinder in place. Tighten this bolt as directed by your owner’s manual.
  3. Attach the grill’s pressure regulator (connected to the hose) to the cylinder valve and tighten it by turning it all the way to the right.

Checking for gas leaks.

Once your propane cylinder is connected to the grill, you’re just about ready for your cookout. But first, it’s important to check for leaks in your cylinder, grill connections and hoses. Here is a simple leak test you can do yourself!

  1. Mix a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap in a spray bottle.
  2. Spray the solution on your cylinder valve, regulator and hose.
  3. Open the cylinder valve and look for bubbling. If you see bubbles, there could be a leak.
  4. Tighten all connections, then reopen the cylinder valve. If there is still bubbling, your cylinder or grill connections may need to be replaced.

Using the grill for the first time.

Once you’ve confirmed that your cylinder is attached securely and there are no leaks, you’re ready for your first cooking session. Most modern propane grills have a push-button ignitor. Hold this button down while slowly turning the knobs on your grill. You should see a row of blue flames for each lit burner. Here are some things to consider with your first grilling session:

Refilling your propane cylinder with Superior Propane!

Generally, a 20-pound propane cylinder (the standard grill tank size) will provide 18 to 20 hours of cooking time on a medium grill. When it’s time for more fuel, we recommend you come to one of our convenient propane refill stations in the greater Flagstaff, Williams, Prescott and Sedona region. Refilling a propane cylinder is typically a better value than exchanging it at a gas station or big box store.

A cleaner, more affordable way to fuel trucks, vans, buses, and more!

propane fleet flagstaff, az Did you know that the largest source of carbon emissions in the U.S. is? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it’s transportation.
Any discussion about reducing our country’s greenhouse gas emissions must involve the vehicles we use to transport goods and people. We’re pretty confident that you’ve heard about electric cars, but you may not be aware of another emissions-lowering transportation fuel powering vehicles on American roadways: propane autogas.

What is propane autogas?

Today, propane is the third most common engine fuel in the United States, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center. The AFDC estimates that roughly 60,000 propane vehicles are currently on the road in the U.S. Propane can be stored in an autogas vehicle’s tank under pressure (just like the propane in your home’s tank) and released into an autogas engine for combustion. Some vehicles powered by autogas include:

Is propane autogas good for the environment?

Propane autogas offers fantastic advantages over diesel and gasoline, both in terms of pollution reduction and improving air quality for drivers and pedestrians. Consider these facts:

How affordable is propane autogas?

Beyond its significant environmental benefits, propane autogas can also reduce the fuel budget for your vehicle fleet. Even accounting for conversion costs and propane’s slighter lower fuel economy compared to gasoline and diesel, its lower cost per gallon quickly offsets any upfront expenses. Propane is almost entirely U.S.-made, making it less vulnerable to global energy markets. And if you choose to finance your equipment conversion, you’ll experience immediate savings.

Additionally, autogas vehicles run cleaner than gas and diesel engines, which reduces wear and tear, prevents breakdowns and extends the engine’s lifespan. This will further lower the costs associated with your fleet of vehicles.

Superior Propane is northern Arizona’s go-to autogas supplier.

In Flagstaff, Williams, Prescott, Sedona and many other cities and towns, commercial and municipal vehicle fleets are turning to Superior Propane for their propane autogas.

Superior Propane installs autogas propane tanks and filling stations. These stations are intuitive to use, so your drivers should have no problem refilling their tanks. They’re also cleaner and safer since any lost fuel dissipates into the air instead of pooling on the ground. And once we get your autogas tank set up, we’ll provide you with dependable bulk propane delivery when you need it.

We’ll make your home propane conversion completely hassle-free.

converting to propane flagstaff, az

Every day in Flagstaff, Williams, Prescott and other communities, our team at Superior Propane speaks to homeowners who have heard great things about propane but are worried about switching. They’ve heard that converting a home to propane is complicated or disruptive. They may be worried that it isn’t worth the trouble.

We’re here to tell you that there are incredible benefits to making the switch to propane, and our experienced, courteous technicians can make your fuel conversion process stress-free.

Why is propane a better option than electricity?

A large percentage of the households that contact us about a propane conversion are moving away from electricity. Propane has some significant advantages over electricity as a home energy source.

  1. Reliability — When your home’s heating, hot water and essential appliances are powered by electricity, you’re out of luck when there’s a grid outage. Unfortunately, those outages are becoming more common every year. By contrast, propane-powered households don’t need to rely on a utility. Your on-site propane tank ensures that you have adequate fuel. And if you have a propane generator, you’ll be protected if there’s a power interruption in your area.
  2. Efficiency — Propane furnaces have energy efficiency ratings in the 90+ percent range, meaning you lose almost no heat energy in combustion. Propane-fired water heaters have roughly twice the hot water recovery rate of electric units.
  3. Versatility — With propane, you can take advantage of fantastic home amenities. Propane ranges offer a high-quality cooking experience similar to what professional chefs enjoy. Propane-powered dryers get laundry dry 25 percent faster than electric alternatives. Plus, you can add property-enhancing amenities like fireplace inserts, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and pool heaters!
  4. Eco-friendliness — Some people assume that going all-electric is better for the environment, but the reality is not so clear-cut. Electric equipment in your home may not generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions — but Arizona’s power grid generation is far from green. Over half of our in-state electricity generation comes from coal and natural gas. These are major GHG producers. On the other hand, propane has a much lower carbon intensity than U.S. grid electricity. It’s also methane-free and emits almost no particulate matter!

You can trust Superior Propane for a hassle-free switch!

Propane can dependably power your building project — and the home you’re building!

propane for construction Kingman, az If you’re a home builder or remodeler in northern Arizona, many factors can affect the primary power source for both your worksite and the finished building. Is there access to a natural gas utility in the area? How dependable is the electric grid?

At Superior Propane, we understand how crucial having a dependable energy source is for delivering a new home on time, plus ensuring that it has reliable heat, hot water and major appliances for the new owner.

Here are four benefits of propane for new homes.

Propane is American-made.

Unlike many other energy sources, including several materials used to generate grid electricity, propane is almost entirely produced in the U.S. A natural co-product of oil refining and natural gas extraction, propane is so plentiful that our country actually exports more than we use domestically!

As an American-made fuel, propane is more insulated from the ups and downs of global energy markets, making its price much more stable.

Propane is clean-burning and non-toxic.

Did you know that propane is listed as an alternative fuel in the 1990 Clean Air Act and Energy Policy Act of 1992? It’s true and for good reasons!

Propane has the lowest carbon intensity of any home heating fuel besides natural gas, but unlike natural gas, it’s methane-free. Propane emits virtually no particulate matter, which is a known carcinogen. It’s also a non-toxic, nonpoisonous fuel, so in the unlikely event of a leak, your soil and water will not be harmed. This is why you can install a propane tank underground without risking soil contamination.

Propane is versatile.

Propane has a dizzying number of uses in both residential and commercial settings. When a home has its own propane tank, it can power not only home heating but also:

Propane can also power the forklifts and other construction equipment your team uses on a building project. We can provide bulk propane delivery to your construction site!

Propane is there when you need it.

When a home is powered by 100 percent electricity or natural gas, the family living there is dependent on a utility with often unreliable infrastructure. Gas outages and blackouts have become all too common these days. But propane keeps working when a utility fails. The homeowner has a dedicated storage tank supplying fuel to their home.

Superior Propane can be your fueling partner on any home construction project.

In Flagstaff, Williams, Prescott and nearby communities, Superior Propane provides fuel to build new homes. We work with builders, contractors, remodelers and developers to safely and expediently incorporate propane into new and renewed properties. We want to help your business too!

Get more from your home comfort equipment

gas appliance efficiency Prescott, az What do you use propane for in your home?

One of the most adaptable home fuels on the market, propane can power home heating, hot water equipment, cooking products and a whole range of other appliances and amenities. But is it worth making the change to propane appliances?

This is something we talk about with customers in Flagstaff, Prescott, Seligman and other Northern Arizona cities. They want to ensure that propane is as efficient as electricity, natural gas or other energy sources. Let’s look at some propane-fired systems and determine how they stack up for energy efficiency.

Home heating

Firstly, propane generates a lot of heat very efficiently. It produces 2,516 Btu of heat energy per cubic foot, compared to only 1,050 Btu for natural gas. And it takes 27 kilowatt-hours of electricity to make the same amount of energy as a gallon of propane.

What does this mean for home heating? Propane furnaces can consistently heat the air hotter than 115 degrees, no matter how cold it is outside. By comparison, heat pumps struggle to heat air higher than human body temperature. And high-efficiency propane furnaces are between 90 and 98 percent efficient, so you lose virtually no energy in combustion when heating your home.

Water heaters

The average American home uses approximately one-fifth of its energy heating water. It only makes sense to choose the most efficient appliance possible. That almost always means propane.

Propane-fired storage-tank water heaters have hot water recovery rates of roughly double the speed of equivalent electric models. A recent Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) study found that a single-family home using a propane water heater saves about $355 each year on energy compared to a home with an electric unit.

Want unlimited hot water on demand with even lower energy usage? Upgrade to a propane tankless water heater.

Other propane appliances

Propane powers many other products for your home, and it does so efficiently. Propane dryers dry clothes 25 percent faster than electric dryers, leaving fewer wrinkles and less static cling. Propane ranges are the gold standard for home cooking, providing precise temperature control.

Let Superior Propane show you the value of this efficient fuel source!

One more appealing thing about propane is that it goes wherever you need it. So many of our customers live in an area without access to a natural gas utility. Others are simply tired of dealing with the service interruptions they get with electricity and gas utilities.

When you have a propane tank on your property, you control your power source. If the local natural gas infrastructure has a leak or the grid suffers an outage, you’ll still have the fuel you need for your heating, hot water and cooking. Plus, a propane standby generator can keep your lights on in all situations!

And with Superior Propane as your fuel partner, you’ll never run out. Our free automatic propane delivery frees you from checking tank gauges and remembering to call for fuel. We handle the planning for you and deliver fuel before your tank runs low. (Plus, you get a discount on your propane!)

If you’re ready to discover all the great propane products on the market today, get in touch with Superior Propane right away.

We Help You Calculate Your Fuel Needs for Heating, Hot Water, or Appliances

propane usage Jerome, az At Superior Propane Inc., we sell, lease, install, and maintain propane tanks in a wide range of sizes. New customers often ask how large of a tank they think they need—and how often they can expect a fuel delivery.

To answer these questions, let’s look at one of our more common tank sizes: 500 gallons.

How Much Propane Will a 500-Gallon Tank Hold?

This might sound like a trick question, but aboveground propane tanks are generally only filled to 80 percent. The reason has to do with heat expansion. Like water, propane expands in the heat. But propane expands 17 times more than water with the same temperature change.

Propane companies address this with an “80/20 fill rule”. Leaving 20 percent empty space in a tank allows a safe amount of room for the fuel to expand. If you have a 500-gallon propane tank, it can only be filled to 400 gallons.

Bear in mind that underground propane tanks can be filled slightly more than 80 percent because being underground insulates them from much outdoor heat.

Is A 500-Gallon Propane Tank Right for My Home?

We recommend a 500-gallon propane tank if you use propane for home heating, plus multiple appliances such as a water heater, fireplace, space heater, range, clothes dryer or even a generator.

In short, this is a propane tank that can service a lot of equipment and appliances, without you needing to fill-up all too often.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Tank Last?

Determining how long a propane tank of any size will last requires you to consider how much fuel your systems and appliances use. Here are some estimates based on national averages for annual propane consumption:

Heating Systems 1,000 gallons annually
Water Heaters 200-300 gallons annually
Fireplace Products 100-200 gallons annually
Gas Ranges 20-50 gallons annually
Gas Dryers 15-25 gallons annually

Depending on the number of propane products you have and how often you use them, you might use 1,500 gallons of propane each year. This translates to four 500-gallon tank refills of about 400 gallons.

These propane deliveries won’t be evenly distributed. Most of your fuel consumption is in the fall and winter, so you will burn through more propane and receive more deliveries in those months than in the spring and summer.

Let Superior Propane Inc. Take the Guesswork Out of Propane Deliveries!

Essential Propane Safety Tips Your Family Should Know

propane leak Flagstaff, az At Superior Propane Inc., we like to say that propane is a reliable energy source for everyone. Our propane delivery team serves homes and businesses in Flagstaff, Williams, Prescott, and nearby Northern Arizona communities.

Many customers have smaller tanks that fuel one or two propane appliances. Others have 500-gallon propane tanks for their heating and hot water.

Whatever your fuel usage, we are committed to ensuring that you have the propane you need to live your life, but we also want to guarantee that you know what to do if there is ever a propane leak.

Propane Is Designed to Smell Bad

When propane is separated during the natural gas extract and oil refining processes, it has no natural odor. But propane producers want to ensure that homeowners and businesses can quickly identify a propane leak. So, they add a gas called ethyl mercaptan or methanethiol. This additive is composed of carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur.

People describe the smell as like rotten eggs, spoiled meat, or skunk spray. If you have a sense of smell, you’ll notice this odor immediately.

How To Respond to the Smell of Propane

If you smell propane, there could be a leak in the immediate area. You need to react immediately and follow these steps:

  1. Evacuate the house, building, or affected area immediately.
  2. Extinguish any flames, cigarettes, cigars, or other ignition sources.
  3. Don’t touch any light switches, telephones, or thermostats in the affected area, as they can produce a spark.
  4. Close your home’s propane shutoff valve if it is safe to do so.
  5. Once everyone is clear of the area where you smelled gas, call emergency services and your propane company on a neighbor’s phone or your cell phone.
  6. Stay away from the affected area and keep the gas shut off—even if you no longer smell propane.
  7. Allow propane service technicians and/or emergency personnel time to check for a propane leak, repair any issues and ensure the area is safe.
  8. The propane service technician will inspect all gas appliances and relight all pilots. Only then will they give you the all-clear to return.

1. Increased Profits

First and foremost, a propane tank refill station provides a new revenue stream for your business. And you would be amazed at how many people need portable propane tanks.

propane distributionAs the premier propane delivery company in Flagstaff and throughout northern Arizona, we’ve seen the growing popularity of this efficient, affordable, American-made fuel.

Today, roughly 50 million American homes use propane in some capacity, whether for a single appliance or a home’s heating and hot water.

Often, we’re asked just how propane is different from other fuels like natural gas. Here’s a primer on what propane is made of and where it comes from.

Where Does Propane Come From?

Most propane is petroleum based. It can be compressed as a liquid for transportation and storage. It has an extremely low boiling point, so it vaporizes to a gaseous state at a low temperature when pressure is relieved. Most propane is a co-product of natural gas extraction and crude oil refining, wherein no additional drilling is required to get it. And an increasing amount of propane is coming from organic feedstocks.

Propane is one of the most secure, in-demand energy sources available today due to its domestic production. In fact, the U.S. exports more propane than we use nationally, meaning that even with fluctuating global markets, propane prices tend to be steadier than other fuel types.

Now let’s explore how precisely this reliable resource is created.

Refining Crude Oil

In the refining process of crude oil, heavier hydrocarbons accumulate in the base while lighter substances like propane drift to the top. Therefore, propane can be extracted and re-packaged as an independent fuel source.

Extracting Natural Gas

The vast majority of propane is a co-product of natural gas. Propane is heavier than natural gas and must be separated during extraction to prevent condensing inside pipelines.

The Renewable Propane Process

Renewable propane is the newest propane product on the market. It is chemically the same as conventional propane, but it’s made from organic and recycled products, falling into four categories:

These raw materials are plentiful and largely inexpensive; They’re often what most consider waste products! Furthermore, renewable propane production has a remarkably low carbon intensity, making the fuel carbon-neutral at combustion. This means no additional carbon dioxide is added to the earth’s atmosphere when using renewable propane.

It’s not in wide use yet, but the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) projects that U.S. producers will bring over 1 billion gallons of renewable propane to market within 10 years.

Your Temporary Heating Options

temp heating flagstaff, az At this time of the year, average nighttime temperatures in Flagstaff and nearby surrounding communities drop well below freezing. Most of us would choose to stay safely indoors with the heat cranked up to a nice toasty level.

But for the construction crews that build new developments in our part of Arizona, that’s not always possible. If you manage a construction site, ensuring reliable temporary heating is crucial. Your employees depend on it to be safe and productive. Plus, your project’s integrity requires adequate temperature control in the winter.

Why Are Temporary Heating Solutions Important for Construction?

First and foremost, your crew needs dependable and robust heat to work safely. Whether you’re talking about a direct-fired device like a torpedo or salamander or an indirect-fired product that draws outside air and blows it into the worksite, temporary heating solutions keep workers healthy and comfortable. This comfort ensures they’ll have full use of their faculties and can focus.

Temporary heating is vital to the integrity of your building. Severe temperature fluctuations can cause concrete foundations to crack. They can delay the breaking of frozen ground and cause ice crystals to form in brick and cement. Paint, spackle, joint compound, and other materials may fail to dry correctly if temperatures are low.

The solution to all these issues is a well-considered and well-fueled temporary heating plan.

What Advantages Does Propane Heating Have?

There are various options for your construction site’s temporary heating, including natural gas, propane, diesel, and electricity. Propane, however, offers many advantages that others don’t.
