Save money so you can spend it on your trip!

save energy on vacationIt’s been quite a year. And if you’re like many of us, a vacation getaway, even if it’s local, is just what the doctor ordered.

If you’re hitting the road this fall, we have some suggestions that will help keep your energy costs under control while you’re out. The money saved can go towards a dinner out on your trip. (You can even splurge and get dessert!)

Disconnect the energy vampires

What are energy vampires? They are those appliances around your house that are sucking up energy even when you aren’t using them. These are things such as your phone and laptop chargers, coffeemakers, toasters, and blenders. Unplug those before you go. And if they’re connected on a power strip, make sure to turn that off, too.

Contact your propane delivery service

If you use Automatic Delivery for your propane delivery, let your propane company know that you will be away, especially if you’re leaving to a second residence for a longer period of time. Your prior propane usage is a factor included in our delivery schedule, so if you’re away, your lowered propane usage, without us knowing, may lead to you getting a delivery you don’t need.

Lower your water heater temperature

Most water heaters today have a “vacation” setting. It turns down the power on water heater itself so that it won’t be running at a consistently higher-level while you’re gone, but will quickly heat water once you return. Make sure to properly adjust this, or, if you’re working with an older unit, simply lower the heat setting by approximately 10-15 degrees while you’re away.

Change your thermostat settings

Cooling makes up nearly half of your energy costs in the summer. You’ll save a lot by turning the air conditioning setting to 85˚ Fahrenheit on days you know you’ll be away. The A/C won’t cycle on as much, which means you won’t be wasting money keeping the house cool when no one is home.

Close the curtains and blinds

You can keep the temperature down in your home by closing the curtains and blinds. This prevents the sunlight from heating your home more and causing the A/C to kick on.
