Will Hot Temperatures Affect My Propane?

Temperatures are heating up across Northern Arizona, and some of our Superior Propane customers have been asking if the sweltering summer weather will impact their propane. It’s a great question, especially as the mercury rises in the coming months. Rest assured, your propane tank is designed to handle varying temperatures safely and efficiently. However, there are some key facts and tips to keep in mind to ensure optimal performance and safety during the hotter months.

Does Propane “Go Bad” in the Heat?

The good news is propane doesn’t “go bad,” regardless of how high the temperatures climb. Unlike other fuels such as gasoline or diesel, propane doesn’t degrade over time. Its potency and efficiency remain intact as long as your tank is properly maintained. This means you don’t have to worry about summer heat compromising the quality or usability of your propane.

Does Heat Make Propane Unsafe?

While propane itself stays stable, rising temperatures can still affect the fuel in your tank. Propane expands as it heats up, and this expansion increases pressure inside the tank. That’s why we never fill your tank more than 80% full, even when topping off. The empty space safely accommodates propane’s expansion and maintains your tank’s integrity.

Additionally, propane tanks are equipped with pressure relief valves designed to release excess pressure when necessary. If you hear a hissing noise near your tank, this is likely the relief valve doing its job.

How Can You Ensure the Safety of Propane in Hot Weather?

While propane tanks are designed with safety in mind, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your propane stays safe and performs well during the summer:

• Think Before You Paint. Painting your propane tank may seem like a good way to enhance its appearance, but darker colors absorb more heat from the sun, which increases the temperature inside the tank. If you’re considering painting your tank, speak with our team first.
• Maintain a Safe Perimeter. Keep flammable items at least 10 feet away from your tank to reduce the risk of accidental combustion.
• Cool Down Your Tank. On especially scorching days, spraying your tank with cool water can help regulate its temperature.
• Store Propane Cylinders in the Shade. If you use portable propane cylinders for your grill or other outdoor appliances, store them outside in a well-ventilated area, ideally out of direct sunlight. Ensure they’re positioned upright and away from flammable materials.
